What is robots.txt and why do you need it?

Robots.txt is a file you place in your website's root directory that tells search engine bots (crawlers) which pages they can and cannot access. It's not a security measure — it's a courtesy to search engines and a way to manage your crawl budget. Search engines respect robots.txt, but it's not enforced. If you want to truly hide content, use password protection or noindex meta tags instead.

Common robots.txt use cases

Block admin pages, login pages, and private directories from being indexed. Disallow duplicate content pages. Prevent search engines from crawling slow or resource-intensive pages. Specify your sitemap location. Manage crawl budget for large sites by blocking low-value pages. Always test your robots.txt file with Google Search Console to ensure it's working as intended.
